Above ground storage tanks are perfect if you are using the water for the garden, vehicle washing or animals.
In Australia above ground tanks are like a status symbol amongst home owners, like who has the best car in the neighbourhood! This is great if you have plenty of space and can tuck a large tank away so it cannot be seen.
These tanks aren’t the prettiest product if you have designed that perfect home with wonderful landscaping, sometimes having a large piece of plastic against the wall is not the best addition to the new home.
Practically though if you have a location where you can hide the tank they can be a lot easier to install i.e no digging but you do need to take into account the location of the tank in relation to the downpipes.
It may be that you need more than one tank if you need to collect say 5000 litres for your home Rainwater Harvesting System and your roof area may not have sufficient water going down that single downpipe to feed that single tank.
The systems are cheaper but bear that in mind….
It is always suggested to try to locate the pump inside the tank to reduce the risk of freezing.
It is also worth pointing out that storing water above ground has 2 potential flaws, firstly it could freeze in winter, not such an issue as it is difficult to freeze such a large volume of water but secondly and more importantly, if during the summer months light and heat hit the tank it might start bacterial growth which could turn the water brackish ( discoloured and smelly ) none of this occurs with water stored below ground.
